Ubud Royal Palace (Puri Saren Agung) has been the official residence of Ubud's royal family for more than 200 years, built during the lordship of Ida Tjokorda Putu Kandel in the early 1800s. Sitting at the heart of town opposite the art market, its series of courtyards, ornate stone carvings and traditional pavilions follow classical Balinese design principles. It remains a living palace and the site of grand royal cremations, and it hosts nightly traditional dance performances in its main courtyard.
