Bali Arts Festival
A Month of Culture, Dance & Music
Pesta Kesenian Bali is the island's most prestigious annual arts event — a month-long celebration of Balinese performing arts, crafts, and music. Held at the Taman Budaya Cultural Park in Denpasar, it features hundreds of performances from all nine of Bali's regencies, showcasing the island's extraordinary creative traditions.
Pesta Kesenian Bali — the Bali Arts Festival — was established in 1979 by the then-Governor of Bali, Professor Ida Bagus Mantra, with the express purpose of preserving and promoting Balinese traditional arts in the face of rapid modernisation and tourism development. Nearly five decades later, it remains the most important cultural event on the Balinese calendar, and one of the largest arts festivals in Southeast Asia.
The festival runs for an entire month, centred on the magnificent Taman Budaya Cultural Arts Centre in Denpasar, but with satellite events happening across all nine regencies of Bali — from the mountains of Kintamani to the beaches of Jembrana. Every year opens with a breathtaking grand parade through the streets of Denpasar, in which thousands of performers, musicians, and artisans from every regency march in full ceremonial costume.
The performance programme is extraordinary in its scope and quality. Nightly shows at the main Ardha Candra open-air amphitheatre feature the full canon of Balinese performing arts: the hypnotic Kecak fire dance, the ancient Legong court dance, the dramatic Barong and Rangda demon battle, the sacred Gambuh dance drama (considered the mother of all Balinese performing arts), and many rarely-seen ritual forms that are only performed during this festival.
Beyond performances, the festival features expansive craft exhibitions showcasing Balinese woodcarving, silverwork, painting, weaving, and ceremonial arts. Food stalls fill the grounds with the aromas of Balinese cuisine, and special educational workshops allow visitors to try their hand at traditional crafts. For anyone serious about understanding Balinese culture, spending even one evening at the Bali Arts Festival is an unmissable experience.
