Klungkung was historically the most senior of Bali's royal kingdoms — the seat of the Dewa Agung, the island's paramount ruler — and its capital, Semarapura, remains a centre of Balinese art, history, and identity. The Klungkung Heritage Festival honours this royal legacy with a programme of culture and performance set among the regency's historic monuments.
The festival's heart is the Kertha Gosa complex — the former royal court of justice — and the adjacent Taman Gili, a floating pavilion set in a lily-filled moat, both famous for their ceilings painted in the traditional Kamasan wayang style. Klungkung is also the home of this classical Balinese painting tradition, and the festival celebrates Kamasan art alongside the region's other crafts.
Expect a rich programme of classical and sacred Balinese dance, gamelan, theatrical performances, and processions, together with exhibitions of painting, weaving (including the famous double-ikat gringsing of nearby Tenganan), and other heritage crafts.
