About Gili Air

Gili Air is the closest of the three Gili Islands to the north-west coast of Lombok, in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia — not part of Bali. For many travellers it hits the sweet spot — more relaxed than party-focused Gili Trawangan but livelier and better served than tiny Gili Meno. It is ringed by white-sand beaches and turquoise shallows, with a laid-back village of cafés, bungalows and beach bars.

Like all the Gilis, Gili Air is completely car- and motorbike-free: you get around on foot, by bicycle or in a horse-drawn cidomo cart, which keeps the whole island calm and quiet. Green turtles are commonly seen grazing on the seagrass just off the beach, so you can snorkel with them straight from the shore.

The island is small enough to walk around in a couple of hours, with the east side busiest for swimming and sunrise and the west side famous for its sunset bars looking across to Bali's Mount Agung. It is reached by fast boat from several harbours on Bali.

How to get to Gili Air

  • From Bali (Padang Bai or Serangan/Sanur) — A fast boat crosses to the Gili Islands in around 1.5–2.5 hours depending on the harbour.
