Kedungu Beach

A quiet black-sand local beach with empty surf, rice fields right behind it, and zero crowds — Canggu the way it used to be.

Best for: Quiet Canggu-style days without the crowds

About Kedungu Beach

Tucked away on Bali's south-western coast in the Tabanan regency, Kedungu Beach remains one of the island's best-kept secrets. This wide stretch of black volcanic sand offers a refreshing escape from the crowds of southern Bali, sitting roughly 7 km from the famous Tanah Lot Temple. Despite a growing reputation among surfers, it has kept its pristine, low-key charm.

The landscape is dramatic: a broad dark-sand shoreline, rugged cliffs, and lush green rice fields that run almost to the ocean's edge. The contrast between the deep blue Indian Ocean, the black sand and the vivid green paddies makes Kedungu a favourite of photographers and nature lovers — and the drive in, through traditional villages and rice fields, is half the experience.

Kedungu is also one of Bali's great sunset beaches. West-facing and largely undeveloped, it serves up skies of orange, pink and purple with no high-rises or crowds to block the view — often with the silhouette of distant temples and, on clear days, Java's volcanoes on the horizon.
