Pererenan Beach

Canggu's quieter northern neighbour — black-sand, fewer crowds, hidden warungs and one of the best intermediate surf breaks on the south-west coast.

Best for: Quieter surf days and slow brunches

About Pererenan Beach

Pererenan Beach is Canggu's quieter northern neighbour — a black-sand stretch that has held onto more of its laid-back village feel even as the rest of Canggu has boomed. Rice fields still run almost down to the dunes in places, and the beachfront warungs here are simpler and cheaper than the polished clubs a few minutes south.

For surfers, Pererenan is the draw: a punchy reef and beach break that is one of the best intermediate-to-advanced waves on the south-west coast, without the crowds of Batu Bolong. Add a handful of excellent new cafés and sunset warungs and you have Canggu's sweet spot for travellers who want the scene nearby but a calmer base.

Things to do at Pererenan Beach

  • Surf the Pererenan break — A punchy reef and beach break best for intermediate and advanced surfers, cleanest in the early morning.
  • Sunset at a beach warung — Simple bean-bag warungs line the sand — cold drinks, grilled corn and one of Canggu's best-value sunsets.
  • Explore the rice fields — Walk or scooter the lanes behind the beach where working rice paddies still meet the coast.
  • Café brunch — Pererenan's growing crop of specialty cafés serves some of Canggu's best coffee away from the crowds.
