Echo Beach

A black-sand surf beach at the north end of Canggu — consistent waves, sunset bars and a chilled expat crowd.

Best for: Intermediate surfers and sunset cocktails

About Echo Beach

Echo Beach (Pantai Batu Mejan) sits at the northern end of Canggu, a black-sand stretch that has grown from a quiet local surf spot into one of South Bali's most popular sunset hangouts. The dark volcanic sand, the row of cliff-top warungs and beach clubs, and the steady left and right reef break give it a relaxed-but-lively feel that pulls in surfers, digital nomads and sunset-chasers in roughly equal measure.

The headline act is the surf. Echo's reef break is a punchy, consistent wave that works best for confident intermediate and advanced surfers — it is shallow over reef and not the place to learn. Beyond the waves, the appeal is the scene: come late afternoon the warungs fire up their fish grills, the bars fill, and the whole beachfront turns toward the horizon for one of the most reliable sunsets in Canggu.

Because it faces west with an open horizon and very little built up directly on the sand, Echo delivers big, colourful sunsets almost every clear evening — and unlike the more polished beach clubs further south, the vibe here stays casual and barefoot.

Things to do at Echo Beach

  • Surf the reef break — Echo's left and right reef peaks are the main draw for intermediate and advanced surfers — board rental is easy to find on the beachfront.
  • Watch the sunset — The west-facing, open horizon delivers vivid sunsets nearly every clear evening; grab a drink at a beach bar or settle on the sand.
  • Seafood by the sea — Join the evening ritual of fresh fish grilled over charcoal at the beachfront warungs as the sky turns orange.
  • Beach-club hop — Spend the afternoon between La Brisa, Old Man's and the smaller cafés that line the cliff above the sand.
  • Coastal walk to Batu Bolong — At low tide you can stroll south along the sand toward Batu Bolong, passing surfers and warungs the whole way.
