Medewi Beach
Bali's longest left-hand wave — a slow, point-style break popular with longboarders and intermediate surfers escaping the south crowds.
Best for: Longboard surfers
About Medewi Beach
Medewi is a sleepy fishing village on Bali's west coast that is home to one of the island's longest waves — a slow, peeling left-hand point break that can offer rides of well over 100 metres on the right swell. It breaks over a rounded-rock and pebble bottom rather than sharp reef, which makes it far more forgiving than the Bukit's heavy barrels.
That combination of length and mellowness makes Medewi a favourite with longboarders and improving intermediate surfers looking to escape the crowds of Canggu and Uluwatu. The wave works best from mid to high tide during the April–October dry season, and even on good days the line-up stays relatively uncrowded.
Away from the surf, Medewi is pure rural west Bali: black-sand and pebble beaches, rice fields, colourful fishing boats and spectacular sunsets. A handful of warungs and surf-stays cater to the small stream of travellers who make the two-hour trip out from the south.
