About Old Man's Area
Old Man's Area is the beating heart of Canggu — the strip of black sand, surf line-ups and neon-lit cafés along Jalan Batu Bolong that put the village on the world surf and digital-nomad map. The name comes from the iconic Old Man's beach bar (mid-2000s), one of the first venues to serve cold beer and live music directly on the sand, drawing a growing community of surfers and long-stay travellers.
Today the same stretch runs from the ancient Batu Bolong temple at the south end to the cliffs above Echo Beach in the north — a 1.2 km walk past surf schools, warungs, coffee roasters and sunset bars that defines the Canggu experience. The wave is a wide, forgiving beach break on a sand bottom, perfect for beginners and longboarders.
